Services & Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Acupuncture?

A: Acupuncture consists of the gentle insertion and stimulation of thin, disposable sterile needles at strategic points near the surface of the body. These points have proven to be effective in treating various health problems. Although the Chinese discovered and mapped out the location of these points thousands of years ago, modern science has now confirmed their existence through electromagnetic research.

Q: How does acupuncture work?

A: Western Science is not yet able to explain in its own terms the mechanism behind acupuncture, but has noted its effects on many of the body’s systems including the neurological, endocrine, respiratory and digestive systems. According to Traditional Chinese medicine, inserting acupuncture needles in more than 300 acupuncture points on the body helps control the flow of qi, (pronounced chee), a vital energy force that governs health. If there is a disruption in the flow of Qi, then the subsequent imbalance will eventually lead to the manifestation of symptoms. The insertion of needles at specific points along the channels will reestablish the proper flow of Qi, thus encouraging the body’s own natural healing abilities.

Q: What does acupuncture feel like?

A: Since acupuncture needles are extremely fine, minimal to no pain accompanies insertion. People experience a wide range of sensations including warmth, tingling, numbness, pressure or no sensation at the point of insertion. Sensations may occur around the acupuncture point as well as along the channel of which it is a part. Sometimes people feel the Qi moving in areas far from the point of insertion. Generally, people report a deep sense of relaxation, and many fall asleep during their treatment.

Q: What happens during an Acupuncture Treatment?

A: Before visiting the clinic you will be given paperwork to complete regarding your past medical history and present medical condition. During the initial consult and flow up treatments, an acupuncturist may look at your tongue, check your pulse, ask about your diet, lifestyle and presenting signs and symptoms. This range of diagnostic information allows acupuncture practitioners to develop a treatment strategy that is unique to you and your experience of a particular condition. An initial treatment will last about 1 ½ hours and follow up visits last between 45 min to 1 hour.

Q: How many treatments will I need?

A: Duration and frequency of treatment vary since each person is a unique. Some need only a few sessions, while others need the accumulated benefit of weeks or months. This depends on factors such as the severity of the complaint, how long the person has had it, and the extent to which daily activities exacerbate the condition.

Q: How are Herbs used?
A: Medicinal herbal therapy works in conjunction with acupuncture. Chinese herbal medicines are typically a mixture of a number of different herbs. A practitioner will develop a unique formula for each patient to treat their specific ailment or condition.
